Enter scaled Stage 2 scores (0–20) for your best subjects. An English-pattern subject is required for SACE ATAR eligibility — put it in the first box, then add up to 4 more subjects.

How the SACE ATAR is calculated in South Australia

SATAC calculates a university aggregate out of 90 from your scaled Stage 2 results, then converts that aggregate into an ATAR. Each Stage 2 subject result is scaled so subjects can be compared fairly, and at least one English-pattern subject must be included for ATAR eligibility. This calculator uses a simplified planning model of that process — it adds your best scaled scores and scales the sum to the 0–90 aggregate — so treat the result as an estimate, not the official SATAC conversion.

Worked example

Scaled Stage 2 scores of 18, 17, 16, 15 and 14: sum = 80, × 0.9 = university aggregate 72.00 / 90, which estimates to an ATAR of about 87.33 (planning range about 85.33–89.33).

SACE grades and scaling

Your SACE subjects are graded, then scaled by SATAC so that a strong result in one subject counts fairly against a strong result in another. Scaling changes every year with the cohort — check the current SATAC scaling information for the subjects you took, and see the Subject Scaling Calculator for how scaling works in general.

University cut-offs in South Australia

South Australian universities publish a minimum selection rank for each course. Your estimated ATAR is the number to compare with that published cut-off — check the course on the university’s own website rather than relying on a third-party list.

This is the SACE calculator for South Australia. It works from scaled Stage 2 scores — if you were looking for a SACE grade calculator, enter the scaled score that corresponds to your grade and the calculator will estimate your ATAR from it.

Common mistakes

  • Entering grades instead of scaled scores. The calculator needs scaled Stage 2 scores (0–20), not letter grades. A grade on its own does not tell you the scaled score — check your SATAC scaled score for each subject.
  • Counting six subjects. Only your best five scaled Stage 2 scores count. A sixth subject does not add to the aggregate.
  • Forgetting the English-pattern subject. An English-pattern subject is required for the university aggregate. A calculation without it is not a SACE aggregate.
  • Treating the result as official. This page uses a simplified planning model (best five scaled scores × 0.9), not the official SATAC conversion. Use it to plan, and check your official result with SATAC.

Stage 2 subjects and credits

Stage 2 subjects in South Australia are usually worth 20 credits, and their scaled scores run from 0 to 20. Your university aggregate is built from the five best of those scaled scores, multiplied by 0.9 to give a total out of 90. Because the model on this page is simplified, it is a planning guide — the official conversion is published by SATAC for each year.

It depends on the course you want. Many South Australian courses ask for an ATAR in the 70s or 80s, and competitive courses can ask for 90 or above. Compare your estimate with the published cut-off for your course.

No — this is a planning estimate only, using a simplified model of the SATAC aggregate. Your official ATAR is issued by SATAC, and scaling changes every year.
